Post-traumatic heterotopic ossification of the crus. A case study.

چکیده
The formation of mature lamellar bone at an ectopic site in the body is called heterotopic ossification. We report the case of a 28 year-old patient with heterotopic ossification (HO) in the left crus. He complained of difficulties with walking and limited ROM of the ankle joint. At surgery, an incision was made through the center of the HO focus, which was palpable. No change in ROM of the ankle joint was observed following HO removal. The decision was made to lengthen the Achilles tendon. After the lengthening of the Achilles tendon, the ROM of the ankle joint was increased. Lengthening of the Achilles tendon following the removal of posttraumatic HO in the crus is a safe and effective procedure; if the ROM of the ankle joint is restricted.

INTRODUCTION Traumatic neglected dislocations of hip in children are rare entity. Neglected traumatic dislocations of hip in children along with heterotopic ossification are still rare. Post traumatic neglected hip dislocations are to be diagnosed as early as possible and have to be treated with precision and aggression as the outcome of treatment for the same is not predictable. Heterotopic ossification is the formation of new bone in an abnormal location. It is usually seen following central nervous system disorders, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, encephalitis, and burn and trauma. Heterotopic ossification in post-stroke hemiplegia is rare; the reported incidence is 0.5-1.2%. It usually occurs on the paretic side of hemiplegic patients. We prese...
متن کاملHeterotopic Ossification around the Knee after Internal Fixation of a Complex Tibial Plateau Fracture Combined with the Use of Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM): A Case Report
Demineralized bone matrix has been successfully commercialized as an alternative bone graft material that not only can function as filler but also as an osteoinductive graft. Numerous studies have confirmed its beneficial use in clinical practice. Heterotopic ossification after internal fixation combined with the use of demineralized bone matrix has not been widely reported. In this paper we de...
متن کاملAn unusual complication of an infiltrated intravenous catheter: heterotopic ossification in a newborn.
Heterotopic ossification refers to formation of lamellar bone in soft tissues. The etiology is diverse and includes genetic, post-traumatic, and metabolic causes. Elicitation of bone morphogenic proteins are thought to play a key role in the pathogenic process. Initially, heterotopic ossification presents a clinical and radiographic challenge in that it can be mistaken for other more worrisome ...
